If you would be so kind, ask me the seven questions below. Just copy and paste them into a comment, replace the blanks with anything you want--personal, silly, surreal (e.g. 3. Donkeys or sandcastles and why?), or deep--and I'll answer honestly as I can! Then post this in your own LJ and see what kind of things people want to ask you!

1. What do you think of _____________?

2. When did you last ____________?

3. __________ or ___________ and why?

4. What did you ______________?

5. What's your favorite ______________?

6. How would you ______________?

7. Who would you most like to ________ ?

I've been reading reports from The Rift, and once again, yay, internet, because much as I love TW I probably won't be crossing the channel for something like that, but I'm ridiculously fangirlishly pleased that they all seem to be really nice people (did anyone not fall in love with Eve Myles?) and genuinely fond of each other. James I'd-rather-kiss-John-Barrowman-than-any-actress-I've-ever-worked-with Marsters. *g* And that this so isn't one of the OMG hide the evil slash from the actors lest their delicate sensibilities be offended shows, which always struck me as faintly ridiculous. RPS is another cup of tea entirely, and it's common sense as well as common courtesy not to show that to the people you're writing about, but questions about subtext in a show? Totally legitimate, IMO, and I refuse to believe that even in America someone working as an actor could be genuinely upset by the very idea that homosexuality exists or that the character he plays could be seen as gay/bisexual. I always figured that, if anything, those questions might be uncomfortable and unwelcome because the rattle the door of Hollywood's collective closet.

Another New Year meme while I do that procrastination thing I do & ponder if turning my Smallville S5 watching notes into a coherent post would be worth the time & bother. Especially considering how embarrassingly lengthy the comments post for the last season turned out to be.

meme )

solitary_summer: (Default)
Drained, dull and tired and I haven't seen the sun in I don't even remember how long. Christmas was an uneventful and drama-free family thing not really worth talking about.

Finished SV S5 which despite everything seemed a little less... better seems a rather inappropriate choice of word considering the general lack of quality, but at least a bit less far-fetched and absurd than Lana-the-teenage-witch S4. Just how much will I regret buying the next season? Damn you, cliffhanger-ending. And Michael Rosenbaum. And maybe not quite in that order.

And because I'm procrastinating and a bit tired and should really be sleeping, the first-sentence-of-the-first-post-of-each-month 2007 review meme:

January: (6th) ::sigh:: I might start doing a-day-in-the-life picture posts next, because my ability and inclination to write are next to non-existent at the moment. [Quickly to become this year's leitmotif.]

[also:] Had a lovely New Year with [livejournal.com profile] soavezefiretto [...] [ :) ]

February: (1st) When I walked from the shop to the bank at 5 pm, the sky was still light. [And, god, am I looking forward to that again already. Sun. Light. Sunlight instead of fog & clouds and early darkness.]

March: (5th) There's some kind of mental block that keeps me from writing, I swear. [And again with the leitmotif.]

April: (1st) First day of really getting acquainted with the new camera, feeling very, very dumb, although I probably looked a lot cooler than with the Powershot regardless. [I can't believe it's only been nine months. I really feel I've learned a lot in this time, even if I'm still fumbling around in many ways, but photography has definitely become much more important and I like to kid myself that I've actually got better, too.]

May: (1st) Meh. Not in a happy place. Work yesterday was predictably depressing after a free week and really reminded me that I ought to make some effort to find a job that's a little more challenging [Right. Riiiight. ::sarcastic laughter with a slight desperate edge::]

June: (3rd) I don't know what I'd do if I had a job that was actually taxing and stressful. [Whine. Rinse, repeat. Ad bloody nauseam.]

July: (4th) Meh. [livejournal.com profile] pixelwhores (which I'm absolutely pimping here to all the photographers on my f-list, btw) is taking over my livejournal. [For a couple of weeks. So much for attention-span and dedication. No wonder my life is what it is.]

August: (4th) urlaubsreif.... [holiday going-away picturepost]

September: (1st) Aunt's birthday cake finished, albeit a minimalist, done-a-hundred-times version. [Moderately significant, since I'm really glad that my aunt and I are on speaking terms again.]

October: (1st) Er. Still alive... [another picturepost] [That's H. in the picture, btw. so, again, not entirely random.]

November: (17th) The complete writer's block has a lot to do, I think, with the newly discovered fact that I really don't like myself. I don't like to look at myself (metaphorically more than literally), I don't want to think too hard about myself, probably afraid of what I'll find there. [From a lengthy private post. The sentiment is still true.]

December: (2nd) We had the first day of baking Christmas cookies today, which turned out to be more agreeable than I'd thought when I got up in the morning, fairly groaning at the prospect of roughly a million Vanillekipferln (My sister's boyfriend loves them. Very much.) and unable to find a good reason for going through with this year after year, especially when the sky was blue, the sun shining, and I'd maybe have preferred to go out for a walk with my camera. [I'm not happy with the last quarter of 2007 especially. Or, more precisely, with myself during that time.]

It's been a while since I've done this meme...

1. My username is _____ because ____.
2. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
3. My subtitle is ____ because ____.
4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.

1. My username - solitary_summer - is taken from Elizabeth von Arnims's novel The Solitary Summer. I have a rather distinct memory of going through my bookshelves in search of an inspiration for a username years ago (I suspect it was for a NIN message board, not even livejournal), and this somehow stuck. It fits me because I like solitude, it has connotations of melancholy as well as relaxed contentment, it's obscure and vague enough not to immediately signal fanish or other allegiances and therefore isn't likely to date... I've used it for five years now and haven't felt the urge to change it yet.

2. My journal is titled :: from the road : to the sea : to the sky ::, a line from the RHCP's Snow, picked when Stadium Arcadium was constantly running on my computer and car CD-player last year and I was feeling positive and ready for a change in my life, for being more open to possibilities and the world generally. The journal-title is what gets changed most frequently (comparatively speaking; about once a year, or every other year), as I try to reflect the mood of the journal and my mental state there, and somehow I always seems to end up with lyrics from an artist or album I'm particularly fond of at the time. When I first did this meme, it was :: and all the might have : could have beens :: from NIN's The Wretched, after that I think I had :: learn to swim :: from tool's Ænima...

3. I still don't have a subtitle. I never felt the need for one, and with every layout I've used it's just more aesthetically pleasing to have only the title on top.

4. My friends page is called :: bilder am wege :: (which roughly translates as 'pictures by the way-side'), a phrase I've taken from Thomas Mann's journals when I read them a few years ago. For a while (in the American years, if I remember correctly) he uses it for attractive young men he noticed on his daily walks. I like having a German element in my journal, and it's a bit of a private joke, because, unless told, no one who hasn't read the journals pretty attentively will know what it means. It also fits with my voyeuristic way of reading livejournals, but most of the time feeling too shy, awkward or distant to interact or comment.

5. My default userpic - and the only one I've actually used for a long while - is a painting by Adolfo Schlosser; I saw an exhibition of his work in the Reina Sophia museum when I was visiting [livejournal.com profile] soavezefiretto last year, liked it quite a bit and was surprised - since I hadn't even heard of him before - to discover that he was in fact Austrian. The icon is the result of a google picture search, it doesn't have any specific significance or meaning, but it's pretty and relaxing to look at, and it happened to fit nicely with my last layout that had a photo of a reflecting water-surface as a background, and with the current green one. Again, it's rather neutral, which is important since I've become just too lazy to pick out a suitable icon for each entry or comment, and more fandom- or otherwise specific ones tend to bore me after a while.

Had a lovely New Year with [livejournal.com profile] soavezefiretto (whose New Year was probably less lovely, having a cold, and all...); walked through the park in Schönbrunn which was more beautiful than I remember seeing it in a long time, mist dissolving to a brilliantly blue sky, bare trees dripping night-frost molten by the sun, rooks and sea-gulls on the frozen fountain-pond. Tea and cake in the Gloriette cafè, decoration of golden putti hanging in front of the windows, a waiter cursing a tourist standing around waiting for a seat who knocked a tray with two lattes out of his hands. Addicted her to AtS S4; watched Grease and squeed over Zack-as-Kenickie, found a Spanish internet radio station, ate grapes, danced to the Donauwalzer, stood at the window and watched the fireworks, or what we could see of them in the patch of sky above the yard and reflected in the windows opposite.

Watched the Neujahrskonzert on tv, then I dragged her for another walk through a windy, over-cast and mostly deserted, hung-over Vienna (although... showing it to her made me realise how much I love this place, in some ways); made Palatschinken, which weren't pretty, but edible, and evilly tempted her with more AtS.

I miss somebody right now. I don't watch much TV these days.  (Eh. It varies. Do DVDs count as tv?) I own lots of books.  (I hesitate to say 'lots', but it probably does qualify...)
I wear glasses or contact lenses. × I love to play video games. × I've tried marijuana(I'm so very boring...)
I've watched porn movies. × I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship.  (Given my lack of relationship history...) × I believe honesty is usually the best policy.  (I wish it were. But there's something to be said for polite lies, too.)
I curse sometimes.  (Who doesn't?) I have changed a lot mentally over the last year.  (Again, a lot is probably an exaggertion, but I have changed, I think.) × I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me.  (Do I just live a very sheltered life? None of my knives ever leaves the kitchen.)
it goes on... )</sm

Health update, ::le sigh:: : Sore throat, not so much for a change but an addition, oh joy. Stomach is still very iffy & I really got the whole range of side effects from one of the pills. I'm really, really hoping things will improve from now on. Got off work earlier - not that I felt all that worse than I'd already done all week, but I the sore throat was the last drop, so fuck being over-conscientious just for once. It's not as if I mightn't have called in sick the whole week with at least some justification. Also told Ch. I wouldn't come this evening, because 1) watching other people eat chocolate fondue when you can't isn't fun, and 2) I'm really, really tired. I just want quiet and home-time and not stories about said people's horses.

procrastination ahoy... )

solitary_summer: (storm 3 (© clive barker))

Fandom meme, version B5. Because [livejournal.com profile] soavezefiretto's wish is my command.

1. The first character I first fell in love with:
God. It's been what, ten years? However, I had fond memories of Sinclair, and since he's only really there in S1, he must have struck a chord with me, even back then.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Garibaldi. I never disliked him, but it took some growing up and re-watching the show on dvd to really appreciate how his character works, caught up between extremes, perfectionism and the fear of failing and losing control, all or nothing. This is something I can very much relate to now, and perhaps this is why I ended up liking him so much. (And then of course there's Sheridan, whom I've always liked, but at the same time am constantly surprised at liking, because he's not really the type of character I'm usually drawn to.)

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:
Stephen. Again, I don't dislike him, not in the least, but for some reason he's not a character I connect with strongly.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:
Byron is pretty much the only really hated character on B5, isn't he? Well, I can say that I don't hate him. I don't really like him, either, but I think the main problem is that his character was under-developed. Do people hate Zack? Because I'm kind of fond of him, too.

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer:
Ivanova. I distinctly remember loving her, but when I re-watched the show on dvd, I felt very indifferent about her. This is also one of the instances where - I think - I preferred the German dubbing voice.

6. The character I would shag anytime:
Who, little me? They're all so damn epic. Sinclair in S1, possibly. It's that voice. Or Lyta, because she's gorgeous, and I have a thing for red hair.

7. The character I'd want to be like:
'Want to be' is almost presumptuous, but I'd like to have a little of Delenn in my personality.

8. The character I'd slap:
No character as such, but pretty much all the ISN people on The Illusion of Truth.

9. A pairing that I love:
Delenn/Sheridan, to no one's surprise.

10. A pairing that I despise:
Couldn't say. There are so few couples on B5 in any case... I wasn't entirely happy with Garibaldi and Lise, Lise's personality specifically, but despise? Certainly not.

solitary_summer: (Default)

Ah well. There's always time, and - perhaps - just enough remaining brain power for a meme...

Joss-verse (BtVS/AtS)

1. The first character I first fell in love with:
Wesley? I think it might have been Doyle that first caught my interest, but I'm not entirely sure any longer.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Well, love is perhaps too strong a word, but Buffy. I originally started watching BtVS mid-season 4, and I never much liked her, her rather rigid way of seeing things in terms of black and white, good or evil. Too angsty, too... she's not an easy character to like, or to get close to. With her you really need to follow her arc from the beginning to fully appreciate where she's coming from, to understand the impact of the whole Angel fiasco, and what a burden being the slayer really is.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:
Hm. Xander. There are moments when I do like him, because mostly he does, in the end, genuinely regret when he messed up or went too far and, however hard it may be for him, apologises and/or fixes things, but I don't get the wide appeal of the character, and there are moments when he really irritates me, especially when it comes to Buffy and her relationships with Angel and Spike. Lingering jealousy, perhaps, and yes, from a rational POV his attitude is somewhat understandable, but there's a depth of hatred I just find off-putting.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:
Well, I don't find Dawn as annoying as many seem to do, but otherwise... I like Riley, too.

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer:
Willow comes closest. Somewhere along the line I just fell out of love.

6. The character I would shag anytime:
Tara. She's pretty, and normal. Pretty much all the other characters come with too much emotional baggage.

7. The character I'd want to be like:
None! This is Jossverse where no one gets out alive has a chance for happiness, ever. Please. I have enough depression in my life as it is.

8. The character I'd slap:
I'm not one for slapping people, but Xander, on a few occasions.

9. A pairing that I love:
Canon-wise, Buffy/Spike. Fanon-wise, Wesley/Angel.

10. A pairing that I despise:
Angel/Cordelia; they worked so well as friends, why bring in the romantic element, except that apparently a tv-show must have romance. Much too saccharine amd forcedly angsty; from Angel's perspective I could never see Cordelia as more than Buffy rebound, and Cordelia always had delusions of 'He's got a soul, he's different' about Angel, more so than Buffy.

[Oh well, apparently I should have waited for someone to tell me what fandom to meme-ise... Suggestions, wishes - anyone?]
solitary_summer: (arsonist (© clive barker))

It always seems a minor miracle when it eventually turns six and the last customer finally leaves and whoa! I've survived another day and can go home, have dinner, and, more importantly, peace and quiet and privacy. And then I'm always tired and keyed-up all at once, can't sleep, can't even focus on some stupid tv show because it's too emotionally taxing, or perhaps because I don't want to hear people talking, even on tv...

[livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive, because I'm otherwise uninspired.

1. What is the oldest object in the room with you?
One of the stones I collected, I presume. Other than that, I've got all kinds of things from when we cleared out my grandmother's apartment... there's a bronze paperweight with the winged lion of St. Mark that has an inscription from 1886 on the bottom.

[ETA: I'd entirely forgotten, but [livejournal.com profile] pinkyogamuffin's answer reminded me... a few shards of ancient pottery, ahem, how to put this politely and make it sound somewhat less illegal, picked up from various sites in Greece and Turkey. No archaeological context was disturbed, I swear. Most are probably roman, but there are a couple of black-glazed fragments that may be a few centuries BC. I never was a ceramics expert...]

2. What is the newest?
Gift-wrap paper and ribbon.

3. What is your favorite object in the room with you?
One of my ceramic sculptures, because other than camera, books, cds, dvds or pretty much anything else, they're not replaceable, and they're part of me.

4. What is the most valuable object?
The tv, I guess. Or the digital camera. The computer is six years old, I think I'd have to pay money for someone to take it off my hands.

5. What is the ugliest object?
Hard to say, since I'm kind of picky and don't have things I would actually call ugly standing around. A few rather random gifts I got at one time or the other, stored in a box somewhere, I guess. Or the mug and plate painted with a horse I'm going to give Ch. for Christmas, which I don't particularly like, but she probably will.

CD for my sister arrived today, but in the meantime I've been starting to doubt myself and probably won't give it to her after all. Note to self, no more midnight online shopping.

Vanillekipferln &c. have been sent on their way to [livejournal.com profile] soavezefiretto, and I apologise in advance for the crappy, inane card. Just throw it away, mkay? I wanted to replace it, but I was kind of in a rush, didn't want to delay the package for another day, and yeah, I'm aware this is a lousy excuse, but... meh. I'm not good at Christmas cards.
