The thing is... I've just finished Battlestar Galactica, and considering that the show is set in a supposedly gender equal universe I had plenty of issues with all the dead women, Kara's arc, which was basically all about not letting a strong woman be too strong, and rape being used as a weapon against female cylons. And that's not even touching the problems with Admiral Cain or Gaeta and their semi-official outing in the webisodes and what happened to them. I love Angel a lot, but especially in the later seasons the show has huge issues with treating its female characters, be it Cordelia, Fred, Darla, or Lilah, and I still get cranky about Jasmine as a personification of the scary, female, conflict-avoiding hivemind, who has to be defeated by Angel standing up for freedom and individuality.

In comparison to these examples RTD just hasn't fucked up too badly, or too systematically, in my eyes yet. The only thing I can say has well and truly pissed me off in four seasons of DW was sticking River Song in that virtual reality. Maybe he falls back on narrative stereotypes a bit too often, and does slip up occasionally, but generally speaking one can see he tries, and succeeds rather more often than not, on the whole creates female characters that are always three dimensional, likeable, with good and bad qualities, and are just human.

after all, we are talking about the man who wrote a scene in which a woman is reduced to a face embedded in a paving stone and she's then awarded to her boyfriend, who uses her for blow-jobs.

I guess that's a valid interpretation, but it's certainly the bleakest possible. Maybe I'm terminally naive and optimistic, but I saw it more about love not being limited by physical shape.
