I kind of wish I had anything intelligent to say about the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, any meaningful memories to share, because I certainly was old enough to have them, but to be perfectly honest, my mind comes up embarrassingly blank. What I do remember rather vividly is reading about Ceausescu's death, I guess because my best friend at the time was from Romania.

Strangely enough it's the time before that I have stronger memories of. I remember reading Level 7 early in middle school and being scared. I remember my great aunt talking to me about neutron bombs. I remember a time when this song was relevant.

I was 12 at the time. I remember watching it on tv and thinking it was wicked cool, but not much else.

I was 17; and I wasn't politically disinterested either. I really don't know why I don't have more significant memories...

on the Berlin Wall "episode".

I am more connected to memory with regards to Tian'anmen Square massacre. I had just signed up for cable that allowed me to watch the newness of CNN. I think perhaps it is this event that was CNN at its finest despite its infancy and the only 24 hour news outlet. Now...well CNN has been falling down the tubes since the "Situation Room" was erected for post 9/11 "terrorism" news and the firing of Aaron Brown.

You're right... I don't remember watching TV, in fact I think we still didn't have one at the time, but I remember seeing pictures, and (somewhat naively) thinking, they couldn't be doing this...

My best friend at the time was half-German, half-Mexican. (Her father was German, her mother, Mexican -- you never knew what to expect when you went over for dinner.) Anyway, I spent a lot of time at their house in those days, and I was there for dinner the night that they first began letting people through the border crossings. It came across the radio while we were eating. Bettina's father was of course excited, as his mother lived in Frankfurt an der Oder at the time. About a year later, her grandmother finally came to visit.

I was in Berlin a couple of years later, but it was only a brief university trip and most of it was spent in museums or a Stundentenheim in the middle of not really anywhere in former East Berlin; I don't think anyone got much of a nightlife; I certainly didn't. So I don't have all that many memories from that either, except people selling lots of Red Army memorabilia, and pieces of the wall...
