Note to self - falling sleep over a book at 10 pm, waking up four hours later to remove contacts and brush teeth, being unable to go back to sleep until 5 am and then sleeping for maybe another two or three hours is not a healthy sleeping pattern and makes for a cranky and tired
solitary_summer.
Had a glass of wine and browsed through the TW fic I'd started writing and endlessly fiddled with after S2, and since there are two or three chapters that I still kind of like I was vaguely wondering if there'd be a point in trying to turn it into some kind of AU where (e.g.) Ianto finds the 456 files in a box somewhere in the archives and makes Jack come up with a solution just in case, because he suspects they'll eventually come back, and they all lived happily ever after. Fiddle with that for another year or so before finally giving up. But. I have a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference with Ianto comparing Jack and his habit of standing roofs to Ford Prefect. A post-Something Borrowed chapter with a drunk Jack and a slightly dishevelled from the wedding clean-up Ianto, and Jack telling Ianto that, no, this immortality thing won't go away, so Ianto really should get himself a boyfriend/girlfriend, and Ianto essentially saying, no, he's okay with that if Jack is. Post-Exit Wounds last chapter where Ianto tells Jack he loves him, very matter of factly over serving a cup of coffee and not waiting for an answer, because he doesn't want him to find out from a file or letter, like Tosh and her good-bye message to Owen, and Jack saying to the closed door, 'I know,' and, 'You shouldn't.'
And that really doesn't sound very original any longer.
Off to bed now for an uninterrupted 7-8 hours of sleep.

Date: 2009-09-03 05:14 pm (UTC)It's supposed to get a bit cooler tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be less dead when I come home from work, but (I know, there are people working three jobs and whatnot, so I shouldn't whine) the ca. 48 hours/week I'm doing now are really too much.

Date: 2009-09-02 07:33 pm (UTC)Sounds prescient to me, since we got both those scenes in CoE, pretty much! :)
Oh and re:
because he doesn't want him to find out from a file or letter,
I wrote this after CoE ended. (Quite literally - I posted it just over an hour after Day 5 finished.) Very short, obviously.
I hear you on the sleeping front, although for me it's usually small children waking me up...

Date: 2009-09-03 05:35 pm (UTC)It's interesting to watch their reactions (http://pics.livejournal.com/solitary_summer/pic/001ptpew) in Exit Wounds when Tosh says, 'You never knew...'; Gwen is crying, but one can tell that this kind of regret isn't something she's very familiar with; both Jack and Ianto's reaction is much stronger. With Ianto I was sure that either he has a letter of his own somewhere, or is deciding to tell Jack so that he won't have to find out that way. What Jack is thinking I'm still trying to figure out...
It's a bit hard to remember after a year and a half, but I think the 'I love you'/'You shouldn't' was the first line I had in my head, and worked backwards from there.
Although it's probably a sign that I should stick to writing meta when my pitiful attempts at fanfic are not so much jossed, as overtaken by canon. :)

Date: 2009-09-05 11:01 am (UTC)Thank you. As I said in the post, it's something I've had in my head for a very long time - since I saw Exit Wounds, I think, because I could see Ianto thinking along the same lines. Except he'd go for something more permanent than a video. (Also his point is a slightly different one of course - the fact that he deliberately chose Jack, rather than the other way around, and doesn't want Jack to feel guilty.)
Gwen is crying, but one can tell that this kind of regret isn't something she's very familiar with
You know, that's an excellent point that I'd never really thought about... Thank you.
What Jack is thinking I'm still trying to figure out...
A lot of different things, I should suspect. But I think he's still too messed up to actually take that last step... Hating the word 'couple', being unable to respond to Ianto's ILU in kind - he's very much like the Doctor, building walls and hiding behind them, and never, ever saying 'I love you'.
but I think the 'I love you'/'You shouldn't' was the first line I had in my head, and worked backwards from there.
Sounds very plausible!

Oh no, you should write for the show! :) (I, btw, have been bitten by a fix-it plotbunny. I never do fix-its, but this might be the exception. Blame GDL! Also, it won't fix things, really.)
Also, re what we discussed in another post, about Ianto being Jack's soundingboard in COE, rather than Gwen, then it struck me that (certainly during S2) the reason it was always Gwen speaking up was because Ianto generally knew already - look at Flatholm for instance. This causes a major falling out, with Jack putting his boss-foot down, and Ianto is the one to solve things because he already has Jack's confidence to a much larger degree. Show not tell. ::is happy:: I swear that Jack/Ianto was written just for me! :)

It's a bit different in CoE, but throughout S1 and 2 the problem was that Jack was always trying to protect Gwen as much as he could. From the uglier sides of Torchwood or life in general, even from himself, the way he keeps insisting she have a 'normal' life with her boyfriend. He needs her like that, normal, ideal.
With Ianto it was different from the beginning; Ianto knew Torchwood inside out, like Jack he's been hurt by Torchwood, lost someone he loved, and trying to protect someone pretty much becomes a moot point once you yourself pointed a gun at them and threatened to shoot them. And Ianto doesn't have that much of moral high ground either, there is more equality here; not that Jack ever laid all the cards on the table, obviously, but I think it was easier to at least show some of them.

Date: 2009-09-06 07:03 pm (UTC)Most of my fic is like that. :) Well some of it is filling in blanks, but all of it is full of meta!
these things didn't actually happen except in my head
Heh. I know the feeling.
And very good points re. Ianto & Gwen and how they relate to Jack. I'm sort of lost in all kinds of thoughts, and remembering about 5 different meta posts by
*ponders*
Actually, I'm brought back to fic (all the stuff that I have to remind myself didn't *actually* happen *g*) and feel obliged to rec Dresser (J/I S1) and Naked (J/I S2) on the off-chance that you've not read them. (Unlikely, I know, but...)
