Well, in this case it helped that the sun was already very low, and that it wasn't the central focus, but only a minor part of the picture. I guess the camera took enough 'clues' from the rest of the frame not to make it any darker.
Perhaps I might have achieved an even better result if I'd changed both exposure and aperture manually, but I'm still very unsure about that, and my fingers were freezing off as it was already...
