Now I haven't read any of Ann Rice's more recent novels, but God, the woman has delusions of grandeur. We're not talking nobel prize material here, after all.

It is vaguely satisfying though, that apparently I wasn't too far off with my assesment, even without being aware of the exact reason for the decline in quality.

I agree. Her books may be entertaining, though I’ve never been able to finish one, but she’s not even in the top 100 best writers as far as I’m concerned.

I 'll admit to having read (and rather liked) the earlier books of the 'Vampire Chronicles' series around the time when the first movie came out, but the more recent ones read like bad fan fiction.

It's rather tell-tale that almost every lj comment I read on her having decided to work without an editor after 'Queen of the Damned' has been a version of 'well, that explains a lot'. This kind of over-confidence without the actual talent to back it up is somewhat embarrassing...

OMG. It's almost embarassing how seriously this woman takes herself. She writes vampire novels, for petes sake! And not very good ones.

That's what I like about Stephen King. He know what he does, he knows his limitations, and he's not efraid to say so. I thought parts of "On writing" were short from brilliant. I didn't agree with all of it, of course, but at least the guy has some modesty and common sense, qualities that Mrs. Rice seems to have lost somewhere along the way.

Well, I guess she's rich enough to do whatever she wants as long as her publishers stand up for it, but... yes. embarrassing. And kind of sad, because on an entertainment level I rather liked her earlier novels.
