Sep. 27th, 2004 07:19 pmSomething that struck me today about that American diet craze where bread and everything else containing carbohydrates is suddenly evil incarnate (or actually not incarnate in this particular case) ...
It is, I believe, a rather commonly known fact that to produce a certain amount of calories of meat uses up significantly more energy than producing the equivalent in grain, fruit or vegetable. There are probably more scientific terms to describe this, but in very simple words that's what it comes down to.
So in fact the first world, in order to rid itself of its surplus weight which one way or the other is already the result of using up more than our fair share of resources, manages to come up with a method that requires yet even more energy.
Gotta love the irony.
I'm not usually the type to pontificate, I do enjoy good food, I even eat meat occasionally, and I'll admit I mostly eat my meals without thinking about people who might be starving elsewhere (which sounds rather callous, put like this, but it's the truth) - if this makes me a hypocrite, so be it. I still think the Atkins diet pretty much sums up what is wrong with the state of this world.
