It was painful to watch, I couldn't stop crying for an hour after the end and was in a complete haze for two days, and I've never had that kind of emotional reaction to a film or TV series, but even then I couldn't hate it, because like you said, the story felt true. I know a lot of people said it was such a massive break from TW as it had been, but it never felt that way to me. CoE took it a bit further than TW had so far, to a point where there wasn't any 'Now we carry on' for Jack in the end, but the themes were always there.
